no power = chaos

So, if you've been living under a rock for the past week perhaps the following news hasn't made it your way: Seattle and the surrounding 'burbs have no electricity due to the record-breaking windstorm in which some places experienced winds as high as 100 mph. More story here - KomoTV

Last night my electricity goes out at midnight. I think to myself, "It can't be out long, because... well... it's a major city!" Wrong. Power was out until noon today! And what happens when the power is out in half the city? Well, the half that DOES have power is overwhelmed including gas stations. Apparently, there's only two gas stations working in all of Bellevue and the Chevron that is in service had a line about half a mile long around the block. It was so long, in fact, the police had to come in and block out one lane which made traffic even more of a bitch to get through since, already, half the traffic lights weren't working.

What else happens when only half the city has power? Well, those that don't have power, and haven't had power for over 12 hours tend to get hungry and a little irritated when all the food at home goes bad in the fridge. Starving, they trek (on foot because the traffic is apocalyptic in nature) to a fast food place close by. Um, bad choice they realize, as they see the line is coiled around the restaurant (inside, because its freezing outside). Ok, next choice. Hmmm Subway. The line was very long, but not quite as bad. Turns out Subway was so busy and overwhelmed with customers they ran out of bread and had to resort to using their low carb tortilla thingys to make "sandwiches". Supply and demand -because people bought it, ate it and didn't complain since only half the places in Bellevue are open due to no electricity and they, themselves, have no electricity.

I'm just thankful my power came back on. It was seriously, freeeeezing in here.
