This is what I'm talking about.
Or even this? (I think I just found my Halloween costume)
My last post regarding this ickiness can be found here.
Apparently, it is taking over or at least our street. What I find interesting is that even if people wanted to get the vaccine and are in the "high risk" group - they can't get it. Hospitals and clinics (at least here in our county) are slow in getting the vaccine if they have it at all and so those in the "high risk" groups are having to cross their fingers that they have a chance for receiving the vaccination. And even then I'm assuming the vaccine doesn't work right away, that it probably takes at least a week to kick in.
[Repeat] At this point, I feel like they are trying to sell the American public an umbrella on day 5 of a major hurricane.
So, if you are unable to get the vaccine but want some form of protection the following was advice from our ND: (please consult your pediatrician/doctor before taking supplements)
- Vitamin D 2,000 IUD for adults (1,000 IUD for babies/kids)
- 500 mg Vitamin C 3 times a day
- Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, limit intake of processed foods as it can lower immune system
- Adequate rest (I'm still working on this one!)
- Exercise (this one too!)
- Wash hands frequently, keep hands away from face

The shortage is really frustrating, we only had to was 3 hours to get Griffin's shot, but one kid in his daycare waited 4 1/2.
I'm taking Vitamin D but only 1000 units a day (plus whatever comes in my multivitamin and calcium pills which totals very close to 2000 units).
I think keeping your hands away from your face and washing your hands frequently really helps too.
While it might seem last minute to try and get the vaccine now for people who want it, there could be more "waves" of illness, so to get the vaccine in your system can protect you against those too.
Stay healthy!
Vaccine is hard to come by here too! It takes 8 - 14 days to become fully effective. My Dr. Office isn't even offering it to the high risk groups (they are only getting the multi-dose vials which has the mercury based preservative so it is a no-go for little people and preggos) so I have to find a free clinic for the kids which means taking them out for hours into a bunch of people who may already have the virus and you can only get an appointment if you live on the East side of the bridge. If you live in West Salem it is a free for all. For right now we are going on with business as usual because most people who get the virus are doing fine and the one's who do have it are contagious before they have visible symptons.
Mel,
You got me thinking about the themerisol. I found a link from the CDC. I didn't know that "preservative free" vaccines, are actually manufactured with themerisol early on in the process. The article also outlines that themerisol is safe for pregnant women.

Sunny, if the thermisol is safe then I'm wondering why my OB told me to come to her directly for my flu shot last year when I was pregnant. She told me to not go anywhere else because most likely I'd get a shot with thermisol in it so they don't recommend it.
Even if a vaccine is "thermisol-free" there are other preservatives in them that are questionable, unfortunately there aren't many alternatives.
You're definitely right, there aren't many options out there. The CDC states that pregnant women should get the shot either with or without themerisol - its a personal preference option, and they state that themerisol has not shown to have any adverse effects on mother or fetus.
The vaccine Griffin got on Tuesday had themerisol in it, our county had zero doses delivered in single dose syringes, so that was the only option if we wanted him vaccinated within at least the next few weeks, maybe longer. All of the studies I've read show no problem with the preservative (autism related), which helps to calm some of my fears, although I would have preferred to get him the themerisol free version if it was avaiable at the time. I am hoping his booster shot will not have it in it.
Awesome! Land of the free my arse!
