April 20, 2011

I started blogging because no one else wanted to hear it.

And, so, into the Big Black Hole I’d send it sometimes daily and sometimes only weekly or monthly.  The Big Black Hole being the internet which didn’t seem to mind accepting my inane blog posts about movie reviews, complaints on pregnancy and endless poopy diapers.

My blogging started due to a friend’s advice of, “Everyone’s doing it!” So, under peer pressure I timidly placed my first post online for everyone to read – and it felt awesome.  Awesome, because no one and, at the same time,  everyone had the ability to read my little rants on G.W. Bush and orange tests.

I have never blogged for money or fame or for the hopes of becoming the next “it” mommy blogger.  I blog for me.  I blog for the mom who can’t always remember to pack the snacks, for the mom who doesn’t always remember to brush her hair or put the clothes in the dryer.   Now having said that, I recently put up a small ad via Google Ads because with my husband  out of work right now, making even $1.00 a day sounds appealing.   I’m not expecting to become the next Donald Trump by making that small but significant decision.

There are certain things I have tried and have decided to not do again based on my feeling after doing the blog posts, mainly product reviews for very large companies.   After doing one review for 3M I thought, “I’m not sure this is really me.”  And now I have another batch of products from them sitting in my garage waiting to be reviewed and my most important ingredient in my blog post still needs to be my experience, not the product.  And along with doing the big name product reviews come the invites to big store openings of stores I don’t really care about but they assume that because I’m a “mommy blogger” that “Sure, I’d love to attend the new Disney store opening!”  But that’s not the case with me.  I recently decided that kindly turning down the big, corporate PR folks is what will need to happen going forward because I’d rather review a product I truly use and believe in.

Keeping the integrity of my space, my blog, my little corner of the world is important to me and I’m still learning how to make that so.

So tell him and be entered to win $50 for you or for your charity of choice.  (Thanks Daniel!)

"I’d rather review a product I truly use and believe in." This is great. Stay true to what you are interested in! I've been reading the posts entered in this contest and really enjoying reading what people are saying. Good luck in the contest. I'm entered too! :) xoxo

I'd rather chew my owm arm off than go to the Disney store! Then having to blog about it would just make me hate blogging. Nice post, sending positive vibes your way on the Hubby's job search.
Following back from the contest.

Guess that is why I love your blog Marisa. Because you are like me, only waaaaay younger :) Gotta do what that gut tells you is right for you. We'll just stay little, and cool, and well, true.

I've done 2 giveaways on my blog - one for Gevalia and one for the movie Alice in Wonderland - the first being the easiest to work with and the second being the reason I didn't do it again...

Your 3rd paragraph really resonated with me! I forget snacks, I remember to brush my hair if I think the UPS guy is coming. Not because of the UPS guy, it's just knowing someone's going to come to the door that I have to open! And lets just NOT talk about the laundry, ok? Who knows, someone has to make it in the Google Ad world, why not you?

Well said & so true! I considered blogging a few years ago, but felt I really didn't have much to say. This past year, I found a passion in social justice and with that, a voice.

I enjoy the thoughts you choose to share! I'm glad you don't review stuff you don't believe in. WTG.

The contest has been great for introducing me to other bloggers. It seems we all have the love of blogging in common (and we're all women; I wonder where the guys are?)
It's good to hear from a mommy blogger that's not all about the products, but about the experience.

I have never done a review of a product and would only do so if I truly believed in it. Integrity is important to me, even if it is not to big business.
Thanks for a great post.

That is why I don't usually take products to review (also because no one offers them). I will only review if they'll take that good the bad and the silly. A good brand will want that. Also, I failed math (almost) as well.
