- Swaddling blankets/straitjackets: The blanket must be made of a jersey-like stretchy fabric or the Kiddopotamus straitjacket works even better since it has velcro and the baby cannot escape Houdini-style.
- Hairdryer: I know this sounds strange, but just trust me on this one. Have a hairdryer on hand. As soon as that baby is tired, but doesn't want to go to sleep just swaddle him/her turn on the hairdryer for approximately 1-2 minutes and they will be asleep.
- Swing: A baby swing is definitely a necessity as it reminds baby of being in the womb.
- Sling: Same as above, reminds baby of being in the womb and it keeps your hands free to drink the half gallon of coffee you need because the batteries went out in the swing the night before and baby wouldn't sleep in crib - only wanted the swing therefore was up for 2.5 hours. Oh, yeah and..
- Batteries: Be sure to have plenty of those huge, D batteries for the swing. The last thing you want is for the swing to stop swinging at 3am.
- A husband: This is a necessity as you'll need him to take the baby as soon as he walks through the door from work ("you can take off your shoes later honey....HERE YOU GO!") so that you can go out into the World and function without a 10 pound creature spitting up all over your shirt.
- Drive-thru: Suddenly any place with a "drive-thru" has become my favorite place (e.g. Starbucks, Walgreens pharmacy) so there's no lugging of the heavy baby carrier when needing coffee
Updated:
- Itzbeen timer: Thank you Sunny! In all the sleep-deprived haze I don't have to try and remember what time I last changed a poopy diaper or fed Austin.
- Boppy pillow: Many, many uses. Feed, prop, craddle. I thank my parents for buying this because I didn't even know I needed it at the time.

I hear ya on the Drive Thru's...
I was sooooo excited the other week to discover a Subway with a drive thru.
The Drive Thru's become even more of a necessity as the kids get older. Who wants to unbuckle and buckle them back in their carseats all the time???
I think I need that Itzbeen timer....I think it's been over 5 hours since I last changed Ryland....Hmmmm....is it that I forgot or maybe it's that I'm just too lazy and it doesn't seem to bother him....
Marisa - you are so welcome. I had one on my registry and wish I'd bought it for myself. If I have a second baby I will definitely buy it. I can't tell you how many times I rack my brain to try and remember exactly whent the last poopy diaper was, or last feeding.
