Crazy couple of weeks. Especially when your baby catches something that sounds like an incurable disease from a third world country.

Wow, what a couple of weeks we've had.  Including a month of "firsts" for Austin in December:  first hotel stay, first plane ride, first trip to the emergency room, first round of antibiotics for his first ear infection.  Seriously, I'm glad December is over.

Austin did so well on the trip there.  He only fussed when he was tired or hungry and took a good nap on the plane.  He's a complete flirt so all the flight attendants were cooing over him - he totally ate it up.  Feeding him solid food on the plane was a little messy but I told myself I would not stress over little things while traveling with him (especially for the first time).  I was so worried (for days) he was going to be "that kid" on the plane and he was great even though I completely forgot his toys for the ride(!!!!).

Unfortunately, he came down with RSV (basically a Texas-sized cold that is especially hard on babies) which is really contagious.  Thankfully, my parents have a children's hospital just a couple of miles away so we took him there and the pediatrician on duty already knew what he had before the test came back.  All the kids down there have this RSV thing right now (ugh).  I've never seen Austin look more miserable.  He was powering through it but when he was still getting a temperature reading of 103 on the 4th day I worried, so we took him to a children's clinic where he was diagnosed with his first ear infection.  Poor baby!  I wasn't that surprised since he was extremely congested and had a runny nose that would not stop.

Once we gave him the antibiotics he completely did a 180 and started to look much better, play more and smile more.  I have to admit I was terrified because, seriously, I've never seen him look so sick and when the doctor at the emergency room gave us Albuterol in case Austin had a hard time breathing it made my palms sweaty.

I came down with what Austin had as did my mom but Neil didn't - go figure.

On the flight back I was almost positive that Austin's ears would be killing him because of being a little sick still and the ear infection.  So I had bottles, pacifiers all lined up ready to go and, nada.  He didn't have any problems at all, but me on the other hand - baaaaah.  It felt as if someone was stabbing both my ears with a knitting needle when the plane was landing (not once but twice thanks to a layover in Houston).  Taking a decongestant was my plan of action before flying but it didn't help at all.

Lessons learned:  It is so worth it to buy a baby his own seat for when he takes the two hour nap while in the air.  It's not worth stressing about whether or not your baby will be "that baby" on the plane because more than likely there will be a more cranky child on that flight.  Do not book a 6:50am flight (especially when a dumb wanna-be terrorist tries to light his ass on fire a few days before you fly out).

And, so now, the New Year starts off with recovering from RSV and attempting to pack up a house to move.  Wish me luck!  Hope everyone had an awesome New Year!
