I've heard this mentioned in the "Happiest Toddler on the Block" book: Toddlers are like little cave... people. They are clumsy, don't have a huge vocabulary and get frustrated which inevitably ends in a tantrum. Sometimes, it can get ugly and it can get ugly fast. So, I've been researching different activities to avert these manic meltdowns.
One of my favorite books is The Toddler's Busy Book. It has many different, and not too cerebral or messy, projects and activities for little ones. One of the activities I want to try next is the Pocket Matching Game.
Pocket Matching
This is a fun game for toddlers, but takes a while to prepare.
Materials - Gift-wrap or fabric in 4-6 different patterns and colors
- Scissors
- Posterboard, file folder, or large piece of cardboard
- Glue
- Clear contact paper
- Utility knife
- Small index cards or pieces of cardboard, posterboard, or heavy paper
Directions
- Cut a pocket from each piece of gift-wrap.
- Glue the pockets to a large piece of posterboard, leaving the top of the pocket open.
- Cover the posterboard with clear contact paper.
- Slit open the top of each pocket with a utility knife.
- Cut gift-wrap rectangles that will fit in the pockets. (These will be the handkerchiefs.)
- Glue them to small index cards and cover both sides with clear contact paper.
- Your toddler will have fun matching the handkerchiefs to the pockets.
- Store the handkerchiefs in an envelope or Ziploc bag attached to the back of the posterboard.

Or you could stick with my lazy-mom (or productive??? really, who is to say?) alternative: sock matching.
just dump all the socks from the dryer, and have the cave people match them up
and when they get older, you can train them to fold after matching, WIN.
